Archives RSS Generator

Postby phoenixforgotten on Sat Apr 24, 2010 9:55 am

'sup folks.

Finally got around to spending some time making a scraper and RSS generator for http://archives.bassdrivearchive.com/. I've always wanted an RSS feed for certain shows because I often miss updates and downloads. (If there are official RSS features for shows, please point me in the right direction).

Enter The Bassdrive Archives MP3 RSS doohickey.

You basically tick the shows/days you wanna subscribe to, click the "make" button, and save the link it gives you in your RSS aggregator.

It doesn't interpret dates on the shows or anything, so when you first subscribe to some shows/days you have selected, it might appear to have only picked one show. This is because there's a lot of uploads already, and the RSS feed only processes 50 at a time. This should be more than enough for daily updates. I mean, there aren't 20 shows in a day, are there? ;)

I made this for personal use, and as such haven't really tested it beyond my needs, but please feel free to give it a go!

If you have any feedback, please let me know!

Edit: updated for some clarity on initial details

Hope it's useful to you! Please let me know if you have any problems with it.

There may have been some wine involved during the coding process.....

Hmm. What sort of problem did you have? I just tried The Komatic Show as a Live Bookmark and it seemed to work OK. Aside from having squillions of links...

Is this what happened for you?

well, firefox says "dynamic bookmark couldnt get loaded" (i translated it from german)
but i sorted it out: single feeds work, i.e. if i only tick one show, multiple shows and whole days won't work.

so if you can solve this easy and quick, that would be fine - if not, never mind, its not that kind of problem; i'll just do a folder with all the different show-feeds.

thanks again, you simplified my daily routine of checking archives a lot

Made some changes. If you would like to, please try again. I have successfully added the feed for all days to Firefox as a Live Bookmark. Let me know how you go!

yeah, this one works - it now adds all new shows.
if i select several shows with the link from the first post - it gives me (only) all the new shows from the first ticked, i guess its because there are too many to list.
but the last link is proppa for me!
thanks again, lets spread the word now :)

Yep, you're right. That's only the "inital load" tho. The other shows you select should come as they get uploaded to the archives. Maybe keep an eye on the one with your selected shows as well. It should do what you want as new mp3s are uploaded! (Fingers crossed, hehe)

I wanted to add a limit to the feed so that it didn't give all the data every time a browser/aggregator hit it, so this is the reason why it only shows the first ticked show when you first sub to it. It saves me some bandwidth/processing for the same functionality in the end ;)

Feel free to pass it on!

Yo! Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye on it as best I can (just moved and have no Internet yet).

It should update on its own when it scans the archive pages. It only does that once a day to save resources, so it should appear within the next 12-24 hours. :)
